ARIK AIRCRAFT TURNS BACK TO PORT HARCOURT, NO LIGHT ON ABUJA AIRPORT RUNWAY

Some minutes ago, an Arik aircraft from Port Harcourt could not land
at its destination: Abuja because there is no light on the Abuja
airport runway.

Probably someone whose duty it is to switch the light on has slept off
or the usual PHCN struck. Or more 'appropriately' the generator was
faulty.

One would have thought the aviation been under the searchlight owing
to last sunday's DANA crash would be better run. But shebi na Naija!

SUPER EAGLES ATTACKED IN TRAINNING

Information reaching us indicates that Super Eagles were attacked in
while training in Malawi.

It took the intervention of the team CSO to forestall trouble. Reports
however indicates that the Eagles are braving the odds and training in
the dark.

The Malawians are obviously trying to dislodge the psyche of our players.

SENATE OKAYS UNILAG NAME CHANGE

Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the
Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of
the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood
Abiola University (MAU).
In a report gathered by Ascology News, the
Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week
by President Goodluck
Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection
of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw
as illegal and unconstitutional.

Looks like MAU has come to stay!

DEAD BRAZILIAN BOY RESURRECTS ASKS FOR WATER AND DIES AGAIN

A two-year-old boy sat up in his coffin and asked for water before laying back down again lifeless, according to a Brazilian news website.
In a case that seems almost too incredible to be true, ORM claimed that Kelvin Santos stopped breathing during treatment for pneumonia at a hospital in Belem, northern Brazil.
He was declared dead at 7.40pm on Friday and his body was handed over to his family in a plastic bag.

The child's devastated family took him home where grieving relatives held a wake throughout the night, with the boy's body laid in an open coffin.
But an hour before his funeral was due to take place on Saturday the boy apparently sat up in his coffin and said: 'Daddy, can I have some water?'.
The boy's father, Antonio Santos, said: 'Everybody started to scream, we couldn't believe our eyes. Then we thought a miracle had taken place and our boy had come back to life.

'Then Kelvin just laid back down, the way he was. We couldn't wake him. He was dead again.
Mr Santos rushed his son back to the Aberlardo Santos hospital in Belem, where the doctors reexamined the boy and confirmed that he had no signs of life.
He said: 'They assured me that he really was dead and gave me no explanation for what we had just seen and heard.'
The boy's family decided to delay the funeral for an hour in the hope that he would wake up again, but ended up burying him at 5pm that day in a local cemetery.

Convinced that his son was victim of medical malpractice, Mr Santos has now registered a complaint with the police who have launched an investigation
He said: 'Fifteen minutes after rushing him away for resuscitation, they came and told me he was dead and handed me his body. Perhaps they didn't examine him properly. Dead people don't just wake up and talk. I'm determined to find out the truth.'
The local state department today confirmed the boy had been admitted to hospital in a critical condition and was declared dead after suffering cardiac-respiratory failure.

for Manchester City. Ronaldo, who is preparing for Euro 2012 with
Portugal, scored SIXTY goals last term to help Real
to the Spanish title. Jose Mourinho penned a new
deal at the Bernabeu in the wake of their La Liga

PATIENCE FIRES BACK!

Text of statement just released by the office of the 1st Lady in
response to rumour making rounds that the ill fated Dana plane was
denied landing because of the first lady.

Excerpt:

I am responding to the rumor mongers because of the involvement of the
script writers of those that wish to heat up the polity of Nigeria at
every event or given opportunity. Like they have always done, using
every opportunity to make Nigeria ungovernable. Why would a group of
people in different disguises want to play politics with this sad
event just to get back to political rivals or superiors?
This morning, reports from one Ade Atobatele….Information Technology
and Services has filtered the air. Don'tknow which of the firms that
is, claimed that the Dana Airline misfortune was caused by the
closureof airspace for the first lady's aircraft. He was quoted as
saying he was informed by a pilot of a private Jet that also had to
hover in the air for 2 hours 15mins before the airspace opened for
landing. He has conned his story that the social, electronic and print
media has started reporting it without verifying his source.
Let Ade Atobatele (if he does exist) and Nigerians know that the
Nigerian Air space can only be closed for 10 minutes only when an
Aircraft conveying the President approaches an airport and 10 minutes
after landing. A total accumulation of 20 minutes by regulations. And
let Ade and Nigerians also note that the Air space can never be closed
for an aircraft conveying the first lady or any other individual in
Nigeria. Let Nigerians know that regulations gives a code red
preference to any aircraft on "May Day" (in danger) distress against
any other aircraft even if it's presidential. A presidentialjet will
be asked to divert towards a military airbase in case of a conflict in
interest of landing. As we are aware, flight 0992 had called for
MAYDAY 11mins before its ETA (estimatedtime of arrival) at 11 mins,
the aircraft had prepared for landing. No aircraft is allowed to
prepare for landing in an airspace that is closed. 20mins to landing,
an aircraft as large as the boeing MD-83 can only commence descend
from its cruise altitude.
Where then is the logic in Ade's story?
Let Ade also take note that the trafficcontrol unit at the airport has
confirmed that the air space was actually closed for 15mins for the
Dana Air flight 0992 to perform an emergency landing before the
unfortunate incidence.
Please I admonish all readers to disregard the allegation against the
office and person of the First lady in their attempt to incite
Nigerians.
While we all pray that the Good Lord grants Nigerians and most
especially the families of those that lost their lives to the sad
incident the fortitude to bear the loss.
The Allegations:
"Is there any way of getting confirmation about news I'm just getting
that the Dana plane was distressed for a while but could not make an
emergency landing because the airspace was closed for 2 hours for –
the Presidential Jet carrying Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan .
Private jet owners who had to hover in the air same time leaked this.
This was apparently the reason local newsdidn't report the crash for
so long till CNN and foreign news stations started reporting it.
Local news was 'blacked out' trying to kill the story of the airspace
being closed while a distressed plane couldn't land. It would be
shocking if so.
Though there was engine failure there was still time for the plane to
have landed apparently. You do knowanyway that the airspace is closed
for up to 2hours each time the Presidential Jet needs to go into the
air? 2 hours for a 15minute take off or landing! And this jet is used
by President, VP, President's wife and if I recall David Mark . It's
almost a daily occurrence I've been told by airline staff when it
caught me out on a trip."

SUE DANA FOR MANSLAUGHTER-Lagos State HA

Members of the LSHA yesterday called on the FG to sue Dana Air on the
crashed plane that claimed 153 lives.

The honourables opined that after reading the history of the crashed
plane it was obvious that the aircraft was not healthy and shouldnt
have been flown at all.

They also agreed that the crash was due to poor supervision of airline
operation by the Ministry of Aviation. The speaker expressed regrets
that in the last 33 years, Nigeria had recorded more than 40 air
crashes, though air transport is believed to be the safest.

DANA GROUNDED, NCAA DG SUSPENDED

The Senate has asked the Federal Government to ground all planes belonging to DANA Airline until investigations are completed into Sunday’s deadly crash which killed 153 passengers and crew and unknown number of people on ground.

At plenary Tuesday morning, the upper legislative chamber also ordered the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, to step aside until the conclusion of investigation into the accident.

Besides, the senators want aviation authorities in the country to conduct an audit of the airlines in the country with a view to determining their airworthiness.

The lawmakers made the resolution following a motion by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Hope Uzondinma (PDP, Imo).

The lower House had said Monday it would hold a legislative inquiry into the crash separate from government’s planned investigations.

The chairman House committee on media, Zakari Mohammed, said an ad hoc committee will be named to investigate the cause of one of the nation’s most horrific air accidents.

Also, the senate had said Monday it would support sweeping probe not only on Dana air, but the entire aviation industry, an indicator the chamber may not launch its own investigation but may be planning to back the government’s probe instead of conducting a separate one.

All 153 passengers and crew members aboard the plane died while an unexpected number, expected to be huge too, were killed in the buildings and the neighborhood the jet smashed into.

Mr. Mohammed (PDP-Kwara), said details of the probe will be announced on Tuesday when the House meets.

“We cannot fold our arms and allow this to be swept under the carpet. We will support all relevant agencies of government to get to the root of the tragedy. We want to know why it happened,” he said. “We want to, for once, unravel what is responsible for that national calamity.

The lawmaker said the probe, which is to establish the age of the aircraft, its airworthiness.

“We are interested in the nature of the aircraft, the age of the aircraft. Is it supposed to fly in our airspace? We will be very strict on this as the blackbox does not lie. It will tell everything that happened,” he said.

The Senate demanded a thorough investigation of all airlines in the country in a statement by Spokesman, Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia).

“Senate demands nothing, but a holistic investigation of the remote and immediate causes of the plane crash.

“Senate would also insist that the probe this time should not be limited to Dana Airlines and their fleet, but all the airlines operating in Nigeria.

Mr. Abaribe said, “We had thought that Nigeria had landed in the golden era of safe aviation industry, where all the standard codes that conform with international best practices were being complied with.”

DANA AIR PRESS RELEASE

The Dana Air family is deeply saddened by
the tragic loss of the passengers and crew
of Flight 9J-992 of Sunday, June 3, 2012. The
aircraft, with Registration Number 5N-RAM,
departed Abuja for Lagos with 146
passengers onboard. 1 Dana Air Flight Engineer, 2 Pilots and 4 Cabin Crew were
also aboard the flight.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the
families and friends of the deceased, and we
are doing everything we can to assist them
in this extremely difficult time. A 24hr Call Centre service has been
initiated and we
have also set up an information center at
MMA2 to look after their needs and keep
them as quickly informed as possible.
An investigation into the cause of the
accident got under way immediately, under the guidance of the Nigerian
Civil Aviation
Authority (NCAA), who are being assisted
by investigators from the U.S. National
Safety Transportation Board (NTSB). Dana
Air is cooperating fully and assisting the
investigation in every possible way. In accordance with international protocol
governing aviation accident investigations,
all information about the investigation will
come from the Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority. Dana Air will however provide
information relating to the flight itself and updates on steps being taken.
Once again, we at Dana Air extend our
profoundest condolences.

DANA OFFICIAL: WE WERE FORCED TO FLY THE PLANE!

According to the official, "the plane has had problems that the
airlines were aware and should not have flown
but the owners inisted that the ill-fated flight
must go ahead. "The same plane had issues in Uyo, Calabar and
Abuja over the last few weeks and even
experienced issues yesterday morning." Officials of Dana Air were
advised earlier that the
plane shouldn't fly due to some faults noticed in
it, but the Indian owners insisted that the air craft
should fly. Also, the Special Adviser, Technical to Minister of
Aviation, Mr. Victor Oche Elias, has revealed that
the pilot of the ill-fated plane, had alerted the
aviation authority of the airport, on the
emergency situation 11 nautical miles to landing. It was further
disclosed that the pilot's may-day
cry was given priority, but the plane could not
make it, as it crashed 4 nautical miles to landing. MC Donnell Douglas
MD 83 was sold to Dana
Airline in 2009 by a US-based Alaska Airlines
ahead of the airline, commencing its services in
Nigeria.

They are quick to come to Nigeria to do
business cos they know they can cut
corners and beat the system. Sad! Sad indeed!
