ARIK AIRCRAFT TURNS BACK TO PORT HARCOURT, NO LIGHT ON ABUJA AIRPORT RUNWAY

Some minutes ago, an Arik aircraft from Port Harcourt could not land
at its destination: Abuja because there is no light on the Abuja
airport runway.

Probably someone whose duty it is to switch the light on has slept off
or the usual PHCN struck. Or more 'appropriately' the generator was
faulty.

One would have thought the aviation been under the searchlight owing
to last sunday's DANA crash would be better run. But shebi na Naija!

The Malawians are obviously trying to dislodge the psyche of our players.

SENATE OKAYS UNILAG NAME CHANGE

Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the
Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of
the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood
Abiola University (MAU).
In a report gathered by Ascology News, the
Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week
by President Goodluck
Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection
of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw
as illegal and unconstitutional.

Looks like MAU has come to stay!

DEAD BRAZILIAN BOY RESURRECTS ASKS FOR WATER AND DIES AGAIN

A two-year-old boy sat up in his coffin and asked for water before laying back down again lifeless, according to a Brazilian news website.
In a case that seems almost too incredible to be true, ORM claimed that Kelvin Santos stopped breathing during treatment for pneumonia at a hospital in Belem, northern Brazil.
He was declared dead at 7.40pm on Friday and his body was handed over to his family in a plastic bag.

The child's devastated family took him home where grieving relatives held a wake throughout the night, with the boy's body laid in an open coffin.
But an hour before his funeral was due to take place on Saturday the boy apparently sat up in his coffin and said: 'Daddy, can I have some water?'.
The boy's father, Antonio Santos, said: 'Everybody started to scream, we couldn't believe our eyes. Then we thought a miracle had taken place and our boy had come back to life.

'Then Kelvin just laid back down, the way he was. We couldn't wake him. He was dead again.
Mr Santos rushed his son back to the Aberlardo Santos hospital in Belem, where the doctors reexamined the boy and confirmed that he had no signs of life.
He said: 'They assured me that he really was dead and gave me no explanation for what we had just seen and heard.'
The boy's family decided to delay the funeral for an hour in the hope that he would wake up again, but ended up burying him at 5pm that day in a local cemetery.

Convinced that his son was victim of medical malpractice, Mr Santos has now registered a complaint with the police who have launched an investigation
He said: 'Fifteen minutes after rushing him away for resuscitation, they came and told me he was dead and handed me his body. Perhaps they didn't examine him properly. Dead people don't just wake up and talk. I'm determined to find out the truth.'
The local state department today confirmed the boy had been admitted to hospital in a critical condition and was declared dead after suffering cardiac-respiratory failure.

PATIENCE FIRES BACK!

Text of statement just released by the office of the 1st Lady in
response to rumour making rounds that the ill fated Dana plane was
denied landing because of the first lady.

Excerpt:

I am responding to the rumor mongers because of the involvement of the
script writers of those that wish to heat up the polity of Nigeria at
every event or given opportunity. Like they have always done, using
every opportunity to make Nigeria ungovernable. Why would a group of
people in different disguises want to play politics with this sad
event just to get back to political rivals or superiors?
This morning, reports from one Ade Atobatele….Information Technology
and Services has filtered the air. Don'tknow which of the firms that
is, claimed that the Dana Airline misfortune was caused by the
closureof airspace for the first lady's aircraft. He was quoted as
saying he was informed by a pilot of a private Jet that also had to
hover in the air for 2 hours 15mins before the airspace opened for
landing. He has conned his story that the social, electronic and print
media has started reporting it without verifying his source.
Let Ade Atobatele (if he does exist) and Nigerians know that the
Nigerian Air space can only be closed for 10 minutes only when an
Aircraft conveying the President approaches an airport and 10 minutes
after landing. A total accumulation of 20 minutes by regulations. And
let Ade and Nigerians also note that the Air space can never be closed
for an aircraft conveying the first lady or any other individual in
Nigeria. Let Nigerians know that regulations gives a code red
preference to any aircraft on "May Day" (in danger) distress against
any other aircraft even if it's presidential. A presidentialjet will
be asked to divert towards a military airbase in case of a conflict in
interest of landing. As we are aware, flight 0992 had called for
MAYDAY 11mins before its ETA (estimatedtime of arrival) at 11 mins,
the aircraft had prepared for landing. No aircraft is allowed to
prepare for landing in an airspace that is closed. 20mins to landing,
an aircraft as large as the boeing MD-83 can only commence descend
from its cruise altitude.
Where then is the logic in Ade's story?
Let Ade also take note that the trafficcontrol unit at the airport has
confirmed that the air space was actually closed for 15mins for the
Dana Air flight 0992 to perform an emergency landing before the
unfortunate incidence.
Please I admonish all readers to disregard the allegation against the
office and person of the First lady in their attempt to incite
Nigerians.
While we all pray that the Good Lord grants Nigerians and most
especially the families of those that lost their lives to the sad
incident the fortitude to bear the loss.
The Allegations:
"Is there any way of getting confirmation about news I'm just getting
that the Dana plane was distressed for a while but could not make an
emergency landing because the airspace was closed for 2 hours for –
the Presidential Jet carrying Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan .
Private jet owners who had to hover in the air same time leaked this.
This was apparently the reason local newsdidn't report the crash for
so long till CNN and foreign news stations started reporting it.
Local news was 'blacked out' trying to kill the story of the airspace
being closed while a distressed plane couldn't land. It would be
shocking if so.
Though there was engine failure there was still time for the plane to
have landed apparently. You do knowanyway that the airspace is closed
for up to 2hours each time the Presidential Jet needs to go into the
air? 2 hours for a 15minute take off or landing! And this jet is used
by President, VP, President's wife and if I recall David Mark . It's
almost a daily occurrence I've been told by airline staff when it
caught me out on a trip."

SUE DANA FOR MANSLAUGHTER-Lagos State HA

Members of the LSHA yesterday called on the FG to sue Dana Air on the
crashed plane that claimed 153 lives.

The honourables opined that after reading the history of the crashed
plane it was obvious that the aircraft was not healthy and shouldnt
have been flown at all.

They also agreed that the crash was due to poor supervision of airline
operation by the Ministry of Aviation. The speaker expressed regrets
that in the last 33 years, Nigeria had recorded more than 40 air
crashes, though air transport is believed to be the safest.

DANA GROUNDED, NCAA DG SUSPENDED

The Senate has asked the Federal Government to ground all planes belonging to DANA Airline until investigations are completed into Sunday’s deadly crash which killed 153 passengers and crew and unknown number of people on ground.

At plenary Tuesday morning, the upper legislative chamber also ordered the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, to step aside until the conclusion of investigation into the accident.

Besides, the senators want aviation authorities in the country to conduct an audit of the airlines in the country with a view to determining their airworthiness.

The lawmakers made the resolution following a motion by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Hope Uzondinma (PDP, Imo).

The lower House had said Monday it would hold a legislative inquiry into the crash separate from government’s planned investigations.

The chairman House committee on media, Zakari Mohammed, said an ad hoc committee will be named to investigate the cause of one of the nation’s most horrific air accidents.

Also, the senate had said Monday it would support sweeping probe not only on Dana air, but the entire aviation industry, an indicator the chamber may not launch its own investigation but may be planning to back the government’s probe instead of conducting a separate one.

All 153 passengers and crew members aboard the plane died while an unexpected number, expected to be huge too, were killed in the buildings and the neighborhood the jet smashed into.

Mr. Mohammed (PDP-Kwara), said details of the probe will be announced on Tuesday when the House meets.

“We cannot fold our arms and allow this to be swept under the carpet. We will support all relevant agencies of government to get to the root of the tragedy. We want to know why it happened,” he said. “We want to, for once, unravel what is responsible for that national calamity.

The lawmaker said the probe, which is to establish the age of the aircraft, its airworthiness.

“We are interested in the nature of the aircraft, the age of the aircraft. Is it supposed to fly in our airspace? We will be very strict on this as the blackbox does not lie. It will tell everything that happened,” he said.

The Senate demanded a thorough investigation of all airlines in the country in a statement by Spokesman, Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia).

“Senate demands nothing, but a holistic investigation of the remote and immediate causes of the plane crash.

“Senate would also insist that the probe this time should not be limited to Dana Airlines and their fleet, but all the airlines operating in Nigeria.

Mr. Abaribe said, “We had thought that Nigeria had landed in the golden era of safe aviation industry, where all the standard codes that conform with international best practices were being complied with.”

DANA OFFICIAL: WE WERE FORCED TO FLY THE PLANE!

According to the official, "the plane has had problems that the
airlines were aware and should not have flown
but the owners inisted that the ill-fated flight
must go ahead. "The same plane had issues in Uyo, Calabar and
Abuja over the last few weeks and even
experienced issues yesterday morning." Officials of Dana Air were
advised earlier that the
plane shouldn't fly due to some faults noticed in
it, but the Indian owners insisted that the air craft
should fly. Also, the Special Adviser, Technical to Minister of
Aviation, Mr. Victor Oche Elias, has revealed that
the pilot of the ill-fated plane, had alerted the
aviation authority of the airport, on the
emergency situation 11 nautical miles to landing. It was further
disclosed that the pilot's may-day
cry was given priority, but the plane could not
make it, as it crashed 4 nautical miles to landing. MC Donnell Douglas
MD 83 was sold to Dana
Airline in 2009 by a US-based Alaska Airlines
ahead of the airline, commencing its services in
Nigeria.

They are quick to come to Nigeria to do

NIGERIA: WHERE DEATH IS CHEAP!

Bombs are still going off...accidents still happen on the
roads...petrol-carrying tankers still explodes...Suddenly! Planes too
have started crashing.

How did it get to this? If you go to church BH will bomb you. If you
decide to board a plane,it just may crash, if you decide to go by bus
armed robbers may attack and you may be shot dead. If you decide to
stay at home a plane might just crash on your house. If you decide to
just take a walk, you just might be kidnapped and killed if ransome is
not paid.

Hmmm!...so where do we run to? Nigerians die needlessly everyday
because of some folk's negligence and incompetence. We don't care, we
can sacrifice lives just to make few notes.

True, death is inevitable, but here it is cheap! It amazes me how we
don't value human life here. Blatant disregard for obvious signs of
disaster causing thousands of avoidable deaths. This is murder!

God help us all! Our land needs healing. Thousands of brilliant minds
and intellectuals lost yearly to senseless, avoidable deaths.

God! Help Nigeria!

PLANE EXPLODED 20 MINUTES AFTER IT CRASHLANDED

Residents around the Iju area of Lagos where the Dana commercial air
plane crashed said the aircraft did not explode immediately it
crashed. It exploded after about 20 minutes after it crashed into the
buildings. If help had come early, some of the over 140 persons, who
died yesterday might have been saved, residents told news agents from
Vanguard. According to an eyewitness, the plane was seen swinging in
the air before it eventually landed on a newly constructed storey
building between 3pm and 4pm. ''I was here with my wife and other
people when we saw the plane moving around in random directions.
Initially we were confused, but when it was getting usually close to
the rooftop of the houses around, we stood up and traced were it
eventually landed. When we go to the scene, we saw the plane on the
building and it did not explode upon landing. The only fire from
the aircraft was from the cockpit which was not much. It was only ten
of us that first got
to the scene. That little fire would have been quenchable if there was
immediate emergency response from fire fighters. We were even using
sachets of pure water to put off the fire before we heard loud
explosion after 20 minutes.'' When the rescue team did not turn up, it
was learnt that a concerned bystander then called the chairperson of
the local government council who informed an official of the Lagos
State Government. ''When we discovered that emergency rescue service
was not on sight, my wife had to call the chairperson of the local
government, who informed Fashola's people. It was that call that
altered the authorities. But if the rescue service had arrived on
time, they would have been saved because there was no fire when the
plane landed on the buildings. The pilot of the aircraft was very
brave because we
noticed it from the way the aircraft was swinging before it crashed,''
another witness told the Vanguard.

HISTORY OF THE PROBLEMS OF THE DANA AIRPLANE

There are indications that the Dana Air MC Donnell Douglas MD 83 which
crashed around Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos, yesterday has a history of
worrying defaults even before original owners, US-based Alaska
Airlines sold it to Dana Airlines on February 17, 2009. According to
the information from Aviation Safety Network, an exclusive service of
the Air Safety Foundation, the ill-fated aircraft was acquired by
Alaska Airline in November 13, 1990 with registration number N944AS.
However, on November 4, 2002 the aircraft developed fault and had
emergency diversion due to smoke and electrical smell in the cabin
area, which engineers said was because light ballast had over heated.
Four years after, the aircraft's health was also called to question
when on August 20, 2006, it was again evacuated after landing at the
Long Beach, CA due to a chaffed wire bundle that discharged and
produced smoke in the cabin area again. Apparently scared that the
worst could happen, Alaska Airlines was said to have on August 21
parked the aircraft at Victorville until September 11 2008 when it
carried out maintenance on it. Eventually on February 2009 Alaska
Airlines shifted the burden to Nigeria when it sold the ill-fated
plane as 5N-RAM. The MD-83 was manufactured in 1983, announced
go-ahead on January 31, 1983 and had first flight on December 17, 1984
It was a longer range development of the basic MD-81/82 with higher
weights, more powerful engines, increased fuel capacity and longer
range. It was equipped with slightly more powerful 21,000 1bf (93 kN)
Pratt and Whitney JT8D-219s as standard. The aircraft also had higher
operating weights with MTOW increased to 160,000 1b and MLW to 139,500
1b. Typical range for the MD-83 with 155 passengers in around 2,504
nautical miles (4,637km). This is however not the first time an air
mishap has claimed a large number of people. In fact tracing the
history of air mishaps in Nigeria, shows that: November 20, 1969 –
Nigeria Airways BAC VC10 crashes on landing killing 87 on board.
January 22, 1973 – Royal Jordanian Airlines flight 707 carrying 171
Nigerian Muslims returning from Mecca and 5 crewmen died in crash in
Kano, Nigeria. March 1, 1978 – Nigeria Airways F28-1000 crashes in
Kano killing 16. November 28, 1983 – Nigeria Airways F28-1000 crashes
on approach in Enugu killing 53 on board. July 11, 1991 – Nigeria
Airways DC-8-61 crashes in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from system failure
killing 261 on board. September 26, 1992 – Nigerian Air Force A C-130
plane crashes minutes after take-off from Lagos. All 200 on board
killed. June 24, 1995 – Harka Air Services Tupolev 34 crashes on
landing in Lagos killing 16. November 13, 1995 – Nigeria Airways
Boeing 737-2F9 crashes on landing in Kaduna killing 9. November 7,
1996 – A Nigerian ADC( Aviation Development Corporation ) Airline
Boeing 727-231 flying from Port Harcourt to Lagos with 142 passengers
and 9 crew members crashed on landing, plunging into a lagoon with all
on board killed. January 31, 1997 – SkyPower Express Airways Embraer
110PIA crashes on landing in Yola killing 5. January 5, 2000 –
SkyPower Express Airways Bandeirante 110P1A crashes on landing in
Abuja killing 17. May 4, 2002 – Nigerian EAS Airlines' BAC 1-11-500
with 105 people on board crashed and burst into flames in a poor,
densely populated suburb of Kano. 76 on board killed, including 72 on
the ground bringing it to a total 148 dead. October 22, 2005 – A
Nigerian Bellview Airlines Boeing 737 airliner with 117 people on
board crashes and disintegrates in flames shortly after take-off from
Lagos. All on board killed. December 10, 2005 – A Nigerian Sosoliso
Airlines DC-9 crashes in Port Harcourt, killing all 103 on board. Most
on board were fschoolchildren going home for Christmas. September. 17,
2006 – A Nigerian 18-seater Dornier 228 Air Force transport plane,
carrying 15 senior army officers and three crew members crashed
leaving only three survivors that sustained serious injuries. The
plane with registration number 228-212 crashed in northern part of the
country at Oko village in Vandeikya local government area of Benue
State at about 10:30 a.m. October 29, 2006 – A Nigerian ADC( Aviation
Development Corporation ) Airline Boeing 737 with 104 on board crashes
minutes after take-off from Abuja's airport during a rain storm. All
but 6 perished in the disaster. The spiritual leader of Nigeria's
Sunni Muslims, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu
Maccido was among the dead. Build-up to final crash of Dana aircraft
MD-83 in Lagos A Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 with registration
number 5N- RAM that finally crashed, yesterday, killing about 153
passengers on board, was a disaster waiting to happen. On May 3, an
unnamed Lagos station manager
of the airline was reported to have drawn the attention of management
of the airlines that the aircraft in question needed to be grounded
for general check-up but that alarm was ignored. So on May 11, 2012,
the same aircraft that was billed for Lagos/Abuja with more than half
capacity passengers and an air return and had emergency landing at the
Murtala Muhammed airport. Reports said passengers on board had to
hurriedly disembark and sought alternative means of travelling. No
casualty. On May 25, 2012, the same plane that was to
do Lagos/Calabar flight also made another air returns to Lagos after
the crew reported
engine fault. There was also no casualty. Then came the final straw.
On June 3, 2012, the same MD-83 with registration number 5N- RAM was
performing a flight 9J-1993 from Lagos to Abuja with 153 passengers on
board when the crew also discovered that the engine had developed
fault. The pilot made a quick air return to Lagos. But while on a
final appraisal to the runway 16L, the aircraft rammed into a power
line, crashed into a build-up area about 5-6nm from touch down and
burst into flames, killing all passengers on board.
