Ghanian and former Leicester City player JohnPaintsil Locked In His Hummer jeep

The Ghanian player, and former Leicester City player
John Paintsil on Monday afternoon experienced an
embarrassing moment when he failed to get the
engine of his flashy Hummer car started in a crowded
market in Kumasi.
The player was in the car, registered JP 4-09, with his
male friend in the passenger seat and two gorgeous
ladies at the back. Paintsil tried starting the engine of
the car, but he somewhat got some figures wrong,
resulting in the complex car's engine being jammed.
The embarrassing incident occurred right in front of
Melcom Stores at Adum, the commercial nerve
center of Kumasi at 1:00pm. Hundreds of people that
were trading at the area left their products and
rushed to the scene to catch a glimpse of the
'disaster' that had befallen the national star.
The huge crowd at the scene caused vehicular traffic
which affected business in the city on the day.
Paintsil was among the football stars and musicians
that had stormed Kumasi the previous day to play a
charity game at the Baba Yara stadium.
The soccer stars and musicians had visited the
Melcom Stores at Adum as part of activities marking
the charity game. Sources at the scene told DAILY
GUIDE SPORTS that they saw a different person
driving the car when the stars arrived.
According to them, when news got round town that
the stars had visited the area, several people quickly
besieged the place to see them.
An eye witness said perhaps the player wanted to
show off, hence his decision to drive the car this time
around. However, Paintsil, who was evidently
uncomfortable behind the wheels, committed a
blunder and got the car locked up.
Unfortunately, since the player's car was parked just
right in the middle of a busy road, its inability to
move caused massive vehicular traffic in the area.
Paintsil, who was seen sweating profusely behind the
wheels, tried several times to get the car's engine
started but to no avail.
In the end, it took the intervention of some people at
the scene who volunteered to push the heavy car to
shoulder of the road.
Whilst some of the curious people that thronged the
place tried to offer a helping hand to the distraught
player, others who sounded envious of the flashy cars
on parade by the stars were seen casting
insinuations on Paintsil.
They argued that from all indications Paintsil did not
know how to drive the car but he tried doing so when
he saw the huge crowd, but committed a mistake in
the end.
Later on, Togolese international Emmanuel Adebayor,
who was part of the team, left his car and came to
the scene, perhaps to console Paintsil who was still
seated in the Hummer car.
Adebayor then took Paintsil, his male friend and the
two beautiful ladies to his (Adebayor) car and they
sped off.

ETO'O FACES TAX EVASION CHARGES IN SPAIN

A Spanish public prosecutor has
accused Cameroun's striker Samuel Eto'o of
conspiring to evade 3.5 million euros ($4.4 million) in
taxes owed on income from his image rights when he
was playing for Barcelona between 2006 and 2009.
The Barca and Inter Milan former player, now with
Russian Premier League club, Anzhi Makhachkala, is
accused of four tax offences, each punishable with up
to five years in prison and a fine of as much as 21
million Euros.
The case presented by the prosecutor on June 15 at a
Barcelona court, and which was seen by Reuters
yesterday, asked a judge to open proceedings
against the player before the statute of limitations on
one of the alleged offences expires tomorrow.
Spain recently launched a drive against tax evasion
as it struggles to meet tough European deficit
reduction targets that have meant budget cuts for
hospitals and schools. Eto'o allegedly created two
companies, one in Hungary and another in Spain, and
used them to channel income obtained from ceding
his image rights to Barca and sportswear maker,
Puma, the prosecutor said.
The Hungarian company paid one of the lowest
corporate tax rates in Europe – 10 per cent to 19 per
cent – while the Spanish company paid a reduced
corporate tax rate of 30 per cent to 35 per cent,
instead of the 45 per cent income tax rate, the charge
said.
Eto'o also allegedly used the Spanish company to
deduct personal expenses, such as payments for his
mortgages, furniture and expenses related to his
luxury cars, the complaint added. Eto'o and his club
could not immediately be reached for comment.
The prosecutor also accused Eto'o's former agent,
Jose Maria Mesalles, and the manager of the Spanish
company, Manuel de Jesus Lastre, of the same tax
offences. Eto'o filed a lawsuit against Mesalles at a
Barcelona court last year, accusing him of betraying
his trust and of embezzling money, local media said.
The Cameroun striker signed for Anzhi Makhachkala,
a club from the volatile North Caucasus region and
owned by Russian billionaire, Suleiman Kerimov, last
August, in a record-breaking move that made him the
richest player in the world on an annual salary of 20
million euros.

US SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS OBAMACARE

Obamacare's individual mandate has been upheld, as
a tax, in a 5-4 decision by the United States Supreme
Court.

The Supreme Court's historic decision to uphold the
Obamacare health-sector law will boost a continued
push by progressives to expand the government's
role in economic and social regulation — and poses a
major setback to the GOP's ongoing campaign for
smaller government.

The court's 5-4 decision effectively accepts liberal
claims that the federal government has the legal
authority to tax Americans to buy goods and
services, including health insurance.

The decision may boost acceptance of the unpopular
and expensive law among non-ideological swing
voters.

A shift in public opinion may aid President Barack
Obama's path to re-election, despite the stalled
economy and high unemployment.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has
promised to replace the unpopular law, which is
likely to boost government spending, boost health-
care costs and restrict Americans' choices.

"If it is deemed to stand … we'll have to have a
president, and I'm that one, that's gonna get rid of
Obamacare," Romney promised June 26 at a
campaign stop in Salem, Va.
Congressional Republicans will likely use the court's
decision to promote a series of laws that reduce
government control of the health sector.

DAVID LEFT OUT AGAIN!

Former England captain
David Beckham has failed to make the British
football team for the London Olympics.
The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder made Britain
coach Stuart Pearce's shortlist of 35 but wasn't
selected for the final 18-man squad as one of three
players over the age of 23 allowed to compete in the
games.
"Everyone knows how much playing for my country
has always meant to me, so I would have been
honored to have been part of this unique Team GB
squad," the 37-year-old Beckham said Thursday in a
statement to The Associated Press. "Naturally I am
very disappointed, but there will be no bigger
supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I
will be hoping they can win the gold."
Beckham had been widely expected to be selected
for the Olympic squad after playing an instrumental
role in in helping Sebastian Coe and his team win the
bid in 2005 to host the games.
"As a Londoner, I will have been really proud to have
played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my
home town as part of Seb's team, and I can't wait for
the games to begin and enjoy every moment along
with the rest of Great Britain," Beckham said.
Britain's three overage players will be Welsh stars
Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy and English defender
Micah Richards, a person familiar with the situation
said. He spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity
because details of the squad haven't been publicly
released.
Giggs played alongside Beckham at Manchester
United and Bellamy is a forward at Liverpool.
Richards plays for Manchester City and appears to
have been chosen ahead of Beckham to provide extra
defensive cover.
The Olympic snub appears to spell the end of
Beckham's career representing his country.
England's most-capped outfield player made the last
of his 115 appearances for England in 2009.

JONATHAN'S BIRTH CONTROL BILL UNDERWAY

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said he may
soon send a bill to the National Assembly on a birth
control.
Speaking at the inauguration of Chairman and
Commissioners of the National Population
Commission (NPC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja,
Jonathan urged that religious belief should not
frustrate the policy.
Former Managing Director of Nigeria Brewery PLC,
Chief Festus Odumegwu, was inaugurated as
Chairman of the Commission and 22 out of 23
appointed Commissioners took the oath of Office and
oath of Allegiance.
The President noted that Nigeria would not be the
first country to make a law on birth control, adding
that the issue of population regulation is very
sensitive.
He said government cannot fold its arms until the
country's population becomes uncontrollable.
The President assured that government would carry
out enough sensitisation before making the law
controlling birth and population.
He also directed the NPC team to begin advocacy on
birth control and promised government support and
funding.

NIGERIA: OUR LAND...OUR PRIDE!

OUR LAND...OUR PRIDE!

Tears trickling down my cheek
Fear almost holding my heart captive
The lot of the hopeless gradually becoming our fate
We wail and cry out no one answer
The man whose duty it is to care and answer is deaf to our cry
The men who should remind him to listen are long blind and deaf to us,
 before him.

We look out but saw no semblance of hope
We search within, still look bleak
“I see better days ahead, it is well” the optimists echoes
“We are doomed, it is over, we have failed” the pessimist maintained
We struggle to hold on to our faith
Trying times are but for a season they say
But our season seems hell bent on staying

Still, steadfastly we hold on to our faith…..
Our strong, steel laden, faith in our land
Saying though we can’t see no hope in sight
But we believe it’s there
Though the future looks bleak
But we know the veil will be lifted and we will behold our bright future
For sure, God will heal our land!
Nigeria…our land, our pride!

BOXING PROMOTER OFFERS CHRIS BROWN AND DRAKE $1M TO TAKE BEF TO THE RING

A celebrity boxing promoter is hoping to capitalize on the alleged nightclub brawl between singer Chris Brown and rapper Drake by offering them $1 million each to take their beef to the ring.
The promoter also says he is asking singer Rihanna to be a ring girl at the bout, but acknowledged she'll likely pass.

Damon Feldman says he has the financial backing of businessman Alki David and that he'll donate a million to a charity that helps abused women if the fight takes place.
The fight, he said, would feature three minute-long rounds with the participants donning oversized gloves and protective head gear.

Feldman says he has not received a response from either Drake or Brown.
And while Drake tweeted about his dry cleaning, and Brown about a helpful stewardess, neither made mention of the offer on their Twitter pages

"HE ONLY PLAYS WELL FOR FERGUSON" CAPELLO ON ROONEY

Fabio Capello has rounded on Wayne Rooney,
claiming he only plays well for Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United striker Rooney had a
disappointing Euro 2012, sitting out England's first
two games on account of suspension and then
delivering a pair of below-par efforts.
The striker scored the winner in the final group game
with Ukraine, but it failed to mask a disappointing
display while he also made little impression in the
quarter-final exit to Italy.
Former England boss Capello has been an interested
observer at Euro 2012 and he took the opportunity to
question Rooney.
"After seeing the latest game, I think Rooney only
understands Scottish," Capello is quoted as saying in
the Sun. "That's because he only plays well in
Manchester, where Sir Alex Ferguson speaks
Scottish."
The Sun claims Capello's barb at Rooney is in
reference to the striker's comment following
England's appointment of Roy Hodgson as manager
when he said: "I think it helps everyone being
English. There are no words lost in translation and we
understand exactly what the manager wants from
us."

NUC SUSPENDS PART-TIME PROGRAMMES IN UNIVERSITIES

The National Universities Commission
(NUC) has announced the suspension of
all part-time programmes run by
universities in Nigeria.
Executive Secretary of the commission,
Professor Julius Okojie, briefing newsmen in
Abuja on Monday said part-time programmes
had been abused by universities.
He said the decision was aimed at rationalising
the programmes so as to bring them in line
with global best practices and standards.
Okojie said the suspension became imperative
in view of the fact that some universities run
part-time programmes illegally and some other
cases the institutions have over-bloated
population in the admission process.
He disclosed that when the ban would
eventually be lifted, admission to part-time
programme would not exceed 20 per cent
intake, adding that lectures for all part-time
programmes would be restricted to university
campuses only.
He said: "For now, all part-time programmes
are suspended, we are going to streamline
them. In effect, we should not have more than
20 per cent of the total students' population on
part-time programmes.
"All part-time programmes must be located on
campus, we don't want satellite campuses
again."
He stressed that regulation was the major part
of the commission's activities and NUC would
not hesitate to wield the big stick on any
defaulting institution.

and his fianceé, Kim Kardashian.
Full report:
Jay-Z had a bit of extra fire in his belly last night – for
good reason.
Pal Kanye West finally managed to get their other
halves on good terms after a peace summit in
Birmingham, of all places.
Beyonce and Kim Kardashian broke (gluten-free)
bread and settled their differences before sitting
together to see their men at work during the final

further get-togethers away from the tour.

This Town alongside Jay-Z, bringing to a close day
one of Radio 1's Hackney Weekend.
