UNILAG RENAMING: COURT GRANTS RESTRAINING ORDER

An interim order was today granted
by the Federal High Court in Lagos restraining the
Federal Government from renaming the University of
Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.
The presiding judge, Justice Stephen Adah, who was
ruling in the suits filed by the students and alumni of
the University of Lagos against the renaming of the
institution, advised the litigants to harmonise the
suits into one.
Named as defendants in the multiple suits are
UNILAG, its Governing Council, the Senate, the
Attorney-General of the Federation and the National
Assembly.
The suits were filed in protest of the renaming of the
institution after the late philanthropist and acclaimed
winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election,
Chief MKO Abiola by President Goodluck Jonathan on
Democracy Day, May 29 earlier this year.
Further hearing in the case has been adjourned till
July 4.
